    so unforgettable

That's a reality, not a dream. Yes I met Jane, shook hands with her and took photos with her. She is so lovely, so vivid. She used chimpanzees' language to say hello to us volunteers, which is so... I can't describe it. She took "Mr. H" with her everywhere, who must be touched by thousands of hands. Da Qiao said there might be so many bacteria on it. But I still feel very lucky to touch it, take photos with it and stay with it for a moment.
I don't listen to all of Jane's speech, because I had some work outside. I only hear the part of "chimpanzees' language". But it doesn't matter. I also have chances to meet even communicate with Jane in the next two days. Before lunch, Jane made a small excellent speech and I can remember most of the sentances. She seemed to be more tired than I saw her in the morning. Many fans were around her.
Tomorrow, with the new friend I met in today's dinner, I will escape from the terrible place to Chongming Island. Maybe in the eyes of students in our department, Chongming used to be also a terrible place. But now I don't think so, because of Jane, and R&S Festival 2006.
All the friends I made in R&S, see you!
Too excited to write more. My only wish is Jane's autographs, for lala and myself.
        Cheers, for our dreams!

    Jane Goodall: An Extraordinary Life
In the summer of 1960, 26-year-old Jane Goodall arrived on the shore of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa to study the area's chimpanzee population. Although it was unheard of for a woman to venture into the wilds of the African forest, the trip meant the fulfillment of Jane Goodall's childhood dream. Jane’s work in Tanzania would prove more successful than anyone had imagined.

    lecture on urban nature

    • The measure of any great civilisation is in its cities, and a measure of a city's greatness is to be found in the quality of its public spaces, its parks and its squares.
    • environment -> society -> economics                      sustainable communities - knowledge society - lifestyle choices
    • major drivers of change: society; sustainable development; the convention of biological diversity(the ecosystem concept); planning reforms(participatory planning).
    • we are at a crossroads, a time to obverse major changes in the landscape of own countryside and of our cities.
    • John Muir: "When we examine anything in the universe we find that it is intched to anything else."

    my pets

They are always quiet, standing by my side with tranquil smile and faint smell. They have simple life with gentle sunshine and a little water. Every day from them I can see vital force, optimism, welfare and other niceness.
I think plants are better than animals as pets. Can you remember the moive about a girl and a killer with their plant? Plants rarely leave you alone, especially those nameless herbages. They listen to me patiently, laughing or crying. I like talking to my plants, in my mind.

    bosh

If a genotype is obviously successful, why allow recombination to reshuffle it?
Why throw away half of an evidently well-adapted nuclear genome and replace it by a some what risky, unknown new half from a male?
Is the answer that the benefits of sex outweigh the costs?
All the sexual species are adventurists.
So maybe we are born adventurers to love.

Maomao said it must be someone who hasn't learned genetics to say so. That's ture.

    virus

Viruses that jump the species barrier tend to be highly pathogenic, as the new host's immune systerm has had no time to build up defences.

    problem tree

The problem tree contains three parts. Crown of the tree, which means global change, is something about waste, water, ecology and air. Bole of the tree, which means local condition, is something about projects, plans and policies. The two are just the symptom of the problem. Root of the tree, which is the most important, is something about value, culture and mind-set.
This is a summary I make from the report of EIA. Pro.Yang introduced it in Chinese but I only wrote down in English. So there may be some differences. There is no doubt that projects, plans and policies have a strong power to change the environment or control the problems. But finally, they are ultimately decided by our value, culture and mind-set towards the environment we live, in a long time.
We will see the consequence one day, whether we like or not, whether we are allowed or not. The reason is simple, we are here. We hardly refuse to see the problem if we can see it.

    "crystal soil" DIY in O3

The potted plants made by "crystal soil" are so beautiful. And it is also very interesting to DIY. I think they are excellent Xmas presents.

    the botany class

We recognised about more than fifty kinds of plants in ECNU during today's botany class. I always enjoy observing plants while Xiaoxi think it dull. So I had a good time except the hot weather. Because I don't know their English names, I can't tell you what I have seen. After all, the course of observing plants is wonderful. Next time when I go to Hangzhou where I have travelled to in May, I will recognise the plants in Sudichunxiao where have more beautiful plants.

green cities, plan for the planet

I attend a propaganda for the world environment day. So tired because of the awful sunshine and I'm wearing black from head to foot. Many people in the ECNU community write down their names on a banner to support "ecology world exposition".

Back to the dorm, I search for the world environment day themes each year.

The picture which moves me most is the one in which a man got close to a polar bear. It's natural, and also distant.

    Dr. Jane Goodall

Only if we understand can we care.

Only if we care will we help.

Only if we help shall all be saved.

                                               by Dr. Jane Goodall

Roots creep underground everywhere and make a firm foundation. Shoots seem very weak, but to reach the light they can break open brick walls. Imagine that the brick walls are all the problems we have inflicted on our planet. Hundreds and thousands of roots and shoots, hundreds and thousands of young people around the globe can break through these walls to make a better world.

                                               by Dr. Jane Goodall

I think she is really a great woman. If you haven't known her, check the "the jane goodall institute" in my links. I hope you can learn something about "JGI" and "Roots and Shoots". That's about the protection of environment, animal and so on. Not only because I am an environment science major student, but I think it's everyone especially the youth that should attend to.
